Hambisanani

Hambisanani High School is situated in the South West of Manguze town, between the Mozambique border and the popular diving beach of Kosi Bay. The area is quite well developed with water, electricity and tar roads.

The school was built in 1985, on the initiative of Prince Walter ‘Phumphele’ Tembe, but funded by all members in the community who added R10 each to enable the building of the school. What started off as a building with three classrooms and a principal’s office has now grown to be 16 classrooms, a computer lab, a library and an administration’s block. Today the school has 822 learners and 22 teachers.

The community of the area speaks three different language i.e. Isizulu, Swazi and isiThonga (a mixture of Isizulu and Portuguese), this is due to the fact that cross border movement was not restricted/monitored until 1994. The economic activity in the area is mostly tourism, subsistence farming which sustained a lot of families, a small town where trading is taking place, transport industry mainly public transport (taxis) and professionals; teachers and nurses. It is interesting to note that most educated people from the area do not leave and work outside but they stay within the area.

Like any other area in the Northern Zululand, sports facilities are scarce so it is difficult for the girls to get the same opportunity to play soccer as boys. The better opportunity they have is to play at school.
