The Madlaka Team

The school was named after a Chief called Madlaka. There was no other high school in the area and learners had to travel long distances to school and thus Madlaka became the first high school in the area. A neighbouring high school was about seven kilometers and there were no other means of transport except donkey carts. The birth of Madlaka High school became a dream come true to many families who had a dream of seeing their children educated.  It started as a Secondary school with only 3 classrooms ending up to grade 10 but now it goes up to grade 11.There is hope that next year (2010) the school will have it first grade 12 class.

The school is located in very deep rural community where soccer is the only sporting activity that requires fewer resources and is enjoyed by all age groups. The community is very supportive of the school and all activities happening in the area. During school holidays, the community organizes matches between school learners and out of school youth and old people as a means of keeping the youth away from risky behaviors such as alcohol, drugs and sex.

Madlaka has been blessed over the two years to have a Teacher such as Mr Nxumalo who is both a Maths teacher and a soccer coach. He is very passionate about sports and other extra-curricular activities. He has managed to break through the tradition that soccer is only meant for boys and introduced a ladies soccer team in the school. The response has been very positive and for this reason other neighbouring schools have introduced ladies soccer as one of the sporting codes in their school. There is therefore desired and much appreciated support for the ladies soccer team and the coach in the school. The active involvement of the team and their coach has been an eye opener to the principal and the school governing body and allowed for support where needed.
However currently there is no female soccer coach involved in the team. This can be attributed to the fact that the school did not have a female teacher in past years. Only this year, the school managed to get two female teachers.
