SANDLASENKOSI HIGH SCHOOL

Location of the school: Nhlohlela area, Mkhuze

Number of learners in the school: 190
Soccer Coach: Mr Tshigovha
Principal: Mr S. Nyawo

The school started as a very small school, operating in a community clinic because there were few households around the area where it was located. Children in the area had little interest in attending school mainly because of the long distances they had to walk to and from school. However in 2005, the school got sponsorship to built a proper school way from the clinic site. It started as a Secondary school with only 3 classrooms ending up to grade 10 but now it goes up to grade 12. The school is very proud that for it’s first Matric class in 2008, they got a 50% pass rate. This made the school and the community proud.

The school is located in very deep rural community where soccer is the only sporting activity that requires fewer resources and is enjoyed by all age groups. The school has been ever since its inception being led by a Female Principal and the community has been very supportive in making the school what it is today.

Learners at Sandlasenkosi have enjoyed a positive support of their principal in all aspects. She is very active and committed in ensuring that girls in particular are given first preference and are treated with the respect they deserve. Encouaraging girls to take part in soccer activities have been a huge achievement because soccer has been culturally known to be a male sport. The Coach, Mr Tshigovha has a played a very significant role in changing perceptions and giving the girls in the school an opportunity to maximize their true potential in sports. The response from the girls has been as well positive. With the commitment shown by the school in support for the team so far there is hope for greater things. However currently there is no female soccer coach involved in the team.
