Nhlanhlayethu
Nhlanhlayethu HS is located in the rural areas, in the outer parts of Nongoma, in northwest Umkhanyakude. The learners in the school are facing many challenges in their everyday life. The common picture in school is that the learners are progressing slowly since they seem to lack self-motivation; due to their background they have a hard time to know what careers to follow. There has been initiatives taken through programmes, such as DEAR (drop everything and read), which has been introduced to help the learners in areas of school related weaknesses. Unfortunately very little progress has shown from that. It is still far to common with early age dropouts from school; amongst the girls teen pregnancy is a problem.Many of the learners are living with old relatives and their peers are attending at tertiary levels far away from home. This gives a poor support in general and might also explain the fact that the community is engaging the youngsters in sport activities. It is not yet accepted that the girls can play ladies soccer; many believe that girls will turn lesbians.
For us it is an important task to orientate the community about the importance of involving the young girls to sport, since the benefits when it comes to performance, abstinence health living and a lot more.
