The school was built in 1977 due to the demand for a high school in the area. Before that learners had to leave their homes and seek accommodation near the high school that was closer, Mbopha High school which was the nearest secondary school. Some learners had to walk 20 km to and from Mbopha as the demand for accommodation couldn’t cater for every learner.

So, for the learners of Empembeni area to continue with education, it was against this background that the community felt the need for a secondary school to be built in the area.

The school was named after Somfula kaMphoswa, kaNgotsha who was the first Inkosi of Empembeni area. Initially the schools opened one grade (8) for the first year and continue adding more grades the following years. Today the school has grown and is a fully operating high school with all grades, 27classrooms and more than a thousand registered learners.

It is located in a very deep rural area with almost half the population unemployed and job opportunities available for professionals i.e. nurses , teachers and police officers . There are no industries in the area to create jobs for unskilled labour. The communities survive on subsistence farming and informal trading.

The girls used to play soccer just for fun but after LdB FC came on board with the soccer program , the team became lively and they are now given the same status as boys soccer team.
