About LdB FC for Life

The figures make very dismal reading: around 25 per cent of the adult population of South Africa are HIV positive. Worst hit are women between 25 and 29 where the figure is 40 per cent. The KwaZulu Natal region, where we work, has inconceivable figures of 50 per cent HIV positive and 70 per cent unemployed.

In autumn 2007, LdB FC Marketing therefore entered into partnership with the South African organisation Star School, which works to counteract the spread of AIDS in South Africa. The project has more than 40,000 students at some 60 schools in South Africa and Namibia.

Our activities in KwaZulu Natal in north eastern South Africa mainly focuses on girls. We use football as a means of bolstering their confidence and self-esteem, while making them aware of their bodies, HIV and AIDS and to believe in their dream of a future without AIDS. Many villages have lost whole generations and a large number of children live without parents. Under such circumstances, preventative work and a hope for the future become particularly important.

The players from LdB FC are ambassadors for our activities. They have visited, and will continue to visit, schools involved in our project. They will also act as “godmothers” for a Swedish association and South African school each. They help to establish a relationship between Swedish and South African youth in an exchange of footballs, shin pads, dreams and thoughts. Within a year we hope that 20,000 South African girls will have a friend each in a Swedish football team and vice versa.

To be a teenager is challenging, regardless of your environment and, if your origin is KwaZulu Natal in South Africa probably even more so. The rate of HIV and AIDS is high, with teenage girls being the most vulnerable group. Then take into consideration that many youngsters are growing up as orphans.

Taking informed decisions requires knowledge and good self-esteem. In an environment where HIV and AIDS are common, many decisions become directly life decisive.LdB FC For Life a soccer project for high school girls, aimed at building the girls’ internal infrastructure to enable them to live meaningful and healthy lives.
